On 5th October 2004, Open University Malaysia (OUM) was privileged to play host to Prof Dr Hans J.A. van Ginkel and Prof Dato’ A.H. Zakri, Director, Institute of Advanced Studies, United Nations University (UNU).

In a meeting with Prof Dr Ansary Ahmad, Senior Vice-President of OUM, the visitors were briefed on the achievements of OUM to date, from hosting the UNESCO Portal for the Asia Pacific Region to being involved in the Asia Cooperation Dialogue and preparing a blue-print on e-Education for the Ministry of Higher Education.

Prof Dato’ Zakri suggested that OUM could increase its profile in the region through collaboration with UNU. Possible areas include peace governance, environment issues and global learning. OUM could play a role in module content development in areas such as diplomacy, WTO negotiation and environment. The proposed Masters in International Water Resource Management is one possible area of mutual interest. With Canada looking seriously in water issues, OUM could team up with UNU to approach funding sources like the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Canadian agencies.
