To usher in the New Year YBhg Prof
Tan Sri Datuk Dr Anuwar Ali, Group Chief
Executive Officer (CEO) of METEOR
Group of Companies and President/Vice-
Chancellor of Open University Malaysia
(OUM) addressed a staff assembly on
17th January 2005.
YBhg Prof Tan Sri thanked all staff in the
Group for their support and commitment in
making 2004 a successful year. His main
resolution would be to steer the METEOR
Group of Companies and its subsidiaries to
further develop and strengthen their
performance.
The year 2004 saw the development of
infrastructure programmes, human
resource development and information
technology being emplaced successfully.
Of great significance was the increase in
student intake, achieving a total of 25,000
students in December 2004 as compared
to 14,200 in 2003.
To support the fast pace of student
increase, academic and support staff have
been recruited, increasing from 276 in
2003 to 374 in 2004. Regional and
University Learning Centres have also
been set-up nationwide to cater to the
overall increase; with a current
establishment of 32 centres.OUM has also been given accreditation by
the National Accreditation Board (LAN)

in December 2004 for five of its programmes.
Of utmost significance in 2004 was the
Proclamation of YABhg Datin Paduka Seri
Endon Mahmood, wife of YAB Dato’ Seri
Abdullah bin Hj. Ahmad Badawi, Prime
Minister of Malaysia, as OUM’s first
Chancellor. OUM’s First Convocation was
also held with a total of 456 students
receiving Diplomas and 5 students the
Bachelor’s degree. History was created for
OUM by both events which were held on
16th December 2004.
In his new year address, YBhg Prof Tan Sri
stressed on the following strategies:
to strengthen and improve internal
group processes including student
retention
to introduce new academic
programmes as well as focussing on
lifelong learning initiatives
to increase work competency and
enhance academic expertise
to spearhead OUM’s internationalisation
to instil synergy in all the business
activities of METEOR Group
The staff was urged to give utmost priority
to students’ needs. Multitasking and team
work are crucial for staff development and
should be upheld to create a conducive and
dedicated work culture for 2005. He
concluded his address by thanking and
wishing all staff a good and productive year
ahead.
